Mikel Arteta discusses Arsenal’s team spirit after Liverpool’s draw

This week has been confirmed in Arsenal fan diaries for a while as a huge event for the club.

Arsenal have three main matches to negotiate, with the two legs of the League Cup semi-final against Liverpool in the north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Having survived the first part of that hat-trick well with a 0-0 draw against the Reds at Anfield – despite the best efforts of red-carded Granit Xhaka – thoughts are beginning to turn to the trip to Tottenham Hotspur.

However, there are now great doubts as to whether or not that match will ever take place.

Here are the latest Arsenal headlines ahead of a potentially huge team weekend.

Will Arsenal benefit from the postponement of Sunday’s derby? Let us know in the comments section below!

Arsenal ask for Tottenham postponement

Arsenal submitted a request to the Premier League to rearrange the confrontation with Tottenham on Sunday.

After Thursday’s clash against Liverpool, manager Mikel Arteta faces a number of new injury problems to deal with. In addition, Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey are also absent from the Africa Cup of Nations finals, while Chaka is absent from suspension.

A decision is due to be made on whether the match can go ahead on Saturday.

A statement from the Premier League read: “The Premier League has received a request for a postponement from Arsenal Football Club in connection with its away match against Tottenham Hotspur, scheduled for 4.30pm on Sunday 16 January.”

He added, “The Premier League’s board of directors will meet tomorrow to review the request and inform the two clubs and their fans of its decision.”

Carragher encourages Arsenal to sell Xhaka

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher encouraged Arsenal to move to Xhaka.

The Swiss midfielder was sent off in the early stages of the match at Anfield, making him five red cards since his move to the club.

While Xhaka has put in solid performances at times over the years, he has often let the team down with reckless decisions.

“The thing with Xhaka is that we said before the game that every coach chooses him, he’s a good character, a good coach, a good boy, he’s a good player, we’ve seen that in the Switzerland shirt and times in the Arsenal shirt too,” said Carragher.

“But it’s a responsibility in terms of that night.”

Saka’s latest injury

Arteta said he is not sure Bukayo Saka will be ready to face Tottenham, should it continue.

The England international was eliminated from the match against Liverpool after introducing an excellent defensive transformation for the team.

Saka has enjoyed an excellent campaign and, as an Arsenal academy graduate, he will be desperate to make an impression in the team’s biggest game of the season.

“He felt something in the last minutes, he was really exhausted,” Arteta said after the Liverpool game.

“I don’t know. He’s a young boy and recovering very quickly. But he’s played a lot of minutes in the last few months, so let’s see who’s available.”
