At least six people shot outside Oregon concert; suspect not in custody

Six people were shot dead during a party at an event hall in Oregon on Friday evening, police said, and the shooter was not yet in custody.

In a statement, police said officers responded to WOW Hall in Eugene after reports of a shooting around 9:30 p.m.

“What law enforcement found when they came to the scene is exactly what you’d expect when six people were just injured,” Eugene Police Chief Chris Skinner said at a news conference. “People are just trying to get out of here, and their friends are on the ground, trying to help.”

Six people have been taken to hospital, Skinner said, with at least one in critical condition. It was not immediately clear the extent of the other injuries.

Police and Wow Hall commanders said the shooting took place in a back parking lot outside the scene.

A concert was held in the hall at that time with the participation of Lil Bean, Zay Bang and other artists.

Police said there were no suspects in custody. Skinner described “chaos” when the officers arrived, and said investigators had not received much information from potential witnesses.

WOW Hall released a statement on its website acknowledging the shooting but declined to speculate on any details.

“We at WOW Hall want to thank all of the first responders who came so quickly to ensure everyone’s safety and first aid administration,” the message said. “We believe all staff and volunteers are safe and held accountable.”

The police chief said investigators had not determined whether the shooting was indiscriminate or targeted.

Eugene is located approximately 110 miles (177 kilometers) south of Portland, Oregon.
