hHello and welcome to Telegraph Sport’s live coverage of the Premier League match between Brighton and Crystal Palace at AMEX.
Brighton boss Graham Potter has urged his players to continue to harness the spirit of Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United squad in tonight’s grudge match with Crystal Palace.
High-flying Albion has racked up five Premier League points thanks to overtime kicks this season, including a dramatic 1-1 draw with arch-rivals Palace at Selhurst Park.
Patrick Vieira’s team travels to the South Coast on Friday night for the return leg, which was carried out entirely at AMEX Stadium.
Seagulls boss Potter, who also saw his side beat Brentford and draw with Southampton and Chelsea thanks to goals scored after the 90th minute, wants to continue to falter in the so-called ‘Fergy time’.
“It’s important to be a team,” he said.
Meanwhile, Vieira praised Jean-Philippe Mateta’s continued commitment after admitting it was a “challenge” on loan to Crystal Palace.
The striker scored his third goal for the club last weekend after being approved to play at Millwall despite his links to Saint-Etienne in the current transfer window.
Since Mateta moved to Selhurst Park last January on an 18-month loan deal from Mainz, he has started just six times, but he will return to the scene of one of his best moments in the Palace shirt tonight.
It was a heel bid at AMEX last season which saw the French striker open his account for south London, but Christian Benteke’s good form in 2021 and the arrival of Odson Edward in August limited the 24-year-old’s chances.
“I think it was a challenge for him,” said Vieira, who netted Mateta against Norwich last month and again at Millwall.
“Since he has been at this football club, he has not had the opportunity to play. Since my arrival, with Christian and Edward arriving, he has had less time.
“But every time the team needed him to perform, he did his best. He was rewarded with two goals, so he’s there, he’s with us, a part of the squad and the team.”
