Chelsea stars ‘fear Azpilicueta will leave on free transfer with Barcelona leading race for defender’

Barcelona are said to be in pole position to remove Cesar Azpilicueta from Stamford Bridge in 2022 with Chelsea sacking the defender.

The Blues captain, 32, is in the final year of his contract in west London and is free to speak to foreign clubs about a January move.

La Liga giants Barcelona have been closely linked with the transfer of the former Marseille player as they look to bring him back to Spain.

Blaugrana coach Xavi is known to be a huge fan of his fellow Spaniard as the former midfielder was keen to have the club sign a pre-contract agreement with him.

And according to ESPN, Chelsea players and staff already fear the versatile defender will be on his way out next summer.

They state that contract talks between the West London Community and Azpilicueta have not progressed.

Sources claim that the two parties disagree over the term of the contract.

The newsletter also adds that Barcelona is leading the race to secure his services, while Atletico Madrid is another club interested in him.

Azpilicueta is being seen as a potential replacement for right-back Kieran Trippier if he returns to the Premier League.

It has been suggested that Azpilicueta believes exiting 2022 is the time to leave Chelsea as it would mark ten years since his arrival from Marseille.

Azpilicueta attacked his teammates earlier in the week after they drew 3-3 away with Russia’s Zenit after their defeat against West Ham.

The result means that Chelsea surrendered to Juventus at the top of their Champions League group.

Taking advantage of his anger, Azpilicueta said: “We lost the top of the Premier League, and the top of the Champions League.

“We have to face reality and analyze ourselves.”
