DirecTV Dumping OAN In Major Blow To Right-Wing News Operation

DirecTV announced Friday that it plans to bring down the right-wing media operation OAN (One American News Network) within months, causing a major setback for former President Donald Trump’s favorite network.

The notified satellite TV provider owner of OAN, Herring Networks Inc. , that he will stop moving the company’s two channels — OAN and lifestyle channel AWE — when their contracts expire in early April, according to Bloomberg, which was first to report the decision.

The controversial OAN, based in San Diego, relies largely on DirectTV, one of America’s largest pay-TV providers, to get its channels to consumers. Without DirecTV, only Verizon FiOS and some smaller pay-TV providers will transmit OAN news, according to its website.

“We have informed Herring Networks that after a routine internal review, we do not plan to enter into a new contract when our existing agreement expires,” DirecTV said in a statement to Bloomberg.

The company, which is owned by AT&T and TPG, gave no reason. But critics have repeatedly called for the company to be dropped from OAN due to the false information it is promoting, most notably the unsubstantiated claim that the 2020 presidential election was somehow rigged against Trump as well as numerous conspiracy theories and serious misinformation about COVID-19.

Records revealed that two OAN reporters who poured in on the Maricopa County, Arizona, presidential vote retaliatory review last year donated $605,000 to the vote check. Dominion Voting Systems last year sued OAN for $1.6 billion for defamation for allegedly paying “verifiable but devastating lies about Dominion.”

Media Matters, a media monitoring company, has been campaigning for more than a year to persuade cable service providers in OAN to abandon the channel.

“DirecTV has made the responsible decision to abandon OAN. Angelo Carusoni, president of Media Matters, said Friday in a statement provided to HuffPost:

“DirecTV made a negligent mistake in 2021 when it renewed its contract with OAN even after OAN spent weeks attacking elections and stoking the embers that helped fuel the January 6 rebellion. They gave OAN a full year to undermine our democracy — and our country has suffered for it.”

DirecTV has been “functionally supporting OAN” for years. Without DirecTV, Caruson added, OAN would certainly not exist in its current form, and probably not exist at all.

Verizon also called on FiOS to drop OAN as well.

John Bergmayer, legal director of the public knowledge advocacy group, said late last year in a blog post that “OAN’s support for the ‘big lie’ that the 2020 election was stolen,” as well as conspiracy theories and misinformation about COVID-19, “relayed from a participant in Market ideas to a peddler of poisonous lies.”

OAN could not be reached for comment. There was no mention of the development in his Twitter feed.

DirecTV has been offering OAN programming to customers since 2017.
