This is the terrifying moment when five people died when a rock wall collapsed on top of tourist boats under a waterfall in Brazil.
A tower of boulders suddenly separated from the canyon wall and collapsed on several pleasure boats, sending a huge wave over Lake Furnas, near Capitolio.
Video images showed a group of small boats moving slowly near the sheer cliff on Lake Furnas when a fissure appeared in the rock and a huge piece capsized directly on at least two ships.
At least one wrecked boat sank, others fled in haste.
Firefighters, including divers, said they were searching for 20 people believed to be missing.
Those injured in the accident sustained broken bones and one of them was in a critical condition in hospital with head and face injuries.
Pedro Ihara, a spokesman for the fire department, told reporters that about 23 others were treated for minor injuries.
According to Globo.com, passengers on other boats have observed canyon cracking.
Then it is reported that they called desperately to warn the other boat.
Lake Furnas is a popular tourist spot with natural canyons and navigable waters as well as nearby hotels and vacation homes.
Minas Gerais Governor Romeo Zima tweeted: “Today we are experiencing the pain of tragedy in our state, due to heavy rain, which has caused a wall of stones to loosen in Lake Furnas, in Capitolio.
“The government of Minas has been present from the beginning through the Civil Defense and the Fire Department.
Rescue work is still going on.
“I stand in solidarity with the families at this difficult time. We will continue to work to provide the necessary support.”
The Brazilian Navy launched an investigation.
