New Jersey Residents Evacuated As 6-Alarm Fire Rages At Chemical Plant

Residents were evacuated Friday night after a six-alarm fire broke out at a chemical plant near downtown Passaic, New Jersey.

Passaic Mayor Hector Laura told NewJersey.com that the fire spread to multiple buildings at the Qualco chemical plant, and the entire structure was expected to be destroyed. The fire also spread to the nearby Majestic Industries.

Officials fear the toxic fumes could harm workers and nearby residents.

Although the fire had so far reached a section of the factory where the chemicals were stored, small explosions began to be heard indicating that the fire was approaching the chemicals, according to Laura.

“There were bad fires,” he said, “but it’s the worst I’ve ever seen.”

Residents were evacuated from the area near the fire. Others were advised to keep their windows closed.
