Perfect return for Paul Townend as Blue Lord wins at Fairyhouse | Racing News

Ireland Champion Blue Lord jockey Paul Townend made a perfect comeback on his debut from injury when Irish Stallion Farms EBF Beginners Chase won at the Fairyhouse.

Townend has been out of action since dislocating his shoulder in a fall in Listowel in September.

He was hoping to return last weekend for a slew of big guns coached by Willie Mullins, but gave himself an extra week just to be on the safe side.

Blue Lords (8-11 favorite), who would have finished second in the junior senior preventer at Cheltenham Fest last season but for falling last when he was far from the final runners-up, has clearly done a lot of homeschooling.

He barely missed a foot on his way to the win, beating fellow stablemate Al Para by five and a half lengths.

“It’s nice to be back, especially for people like him,” Townend said.

“He was very straightforward and loves to fence. He has matured a lot both physically and mentally.

“He’s done really well over the summer and he’s looking for the next fence to take on.”
