Efficacy of Vaccine and Omicron
Expert studies have shown that the risk of serious illness from Covid-19 drops by 90 percent or more among fully vaccinated people.
While there have been breakthrough cases of Covid among vaccinated people, they are rare.
In the event of a breakthrough, victims are unlikely to be hospitalized due to severe or fatal symptoms of the virus.
Health officials have advised that the Omicron variant is more contagious and could lead to more breakthrough cases.
However, the spread could be offset by all vaccinated Americans receiving a booster dose.
Current vaccines are expected to protect against severe disease, hospitalization, and death due to infection with the Omicron variant.
With other variants, such as delta, vaccines have remained effective in preventing severe disease, hospitalization, and death.
Studies have also shown that side effects of the vaccine are extremely rare.
