WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican Senator John Thune said on Saturday he plans to run again in 2022, raising the prospect of his party retaining the South Dakota state seat in the fall.

Thun, a member of the Republican Senate leadership, is said to have considered retiring after serving in the Senate since 2005.

“South Dakota deserves a strong and effective senator who can deliver the results you expect,” he said in a statement posted to Twitter (NYSE). “I am in a unique position to do the job, and I look forward to winning the support of all South Dakota in the 2022 elections for the United States Senate.”

The Senate is currently evenly divided, with Republicans and Democrats controlling 50 seats. The Democrats are the majority party where Vice President Kamala Harris, a Democrat, can vote to break the tie.
