Jermain Defoe believes Tanguy Ndombele can return to Antonio Conte’s plans at Tottenham.
Ndombele has been linked with a move away from Tottenham and was booed by their fans during Sunday’s FA Cup win over Morecambe.
The 25-year-old has reportedly been training this week apart from the rest of the first-team members, but Defoe believes this could be a positive for the midfielder.
talking on transport widthDefoe said: “Sometimes I think that in a situation like this it is not always negative.
“I think staying away from the group, as a player you have to take it as a positive, because it gives you a chance. When you train with the group, sometimes the players can train at 60 percent because you train with the group and you get training, you can stand up and you can talk.
“When you train head-to-head with a fitness coach, you train 100 percent because there’s a short recovery period. So if he can approach it that way, where he thinks ‘I need to get up quickly’, because it’s a great football club, he’s a great manager. Of course you want to join the team and do a good job.
“He came for big money, he gets paid well, and sometimes I saw him and thought, ‘I love this player.’ His passes, he breaks lines, he plays smart – you see him in matches and you can see the potential.
“I think being out of the group isn’t always a bad thing, it’s just about rising quickly and getting the fitness levels the coach wants and hopefully he can get back into the team.”
Conte signings could push Tottenham forward
Spurs boss Conte has yet to sign during the January window, but Defoe believes Spurs’ success in the second half of the season may depend on whether the Italian gets the players he wants.
Defoe said: “I think he came out and said he wanted another defender and striker, maybe to take that burden off Harry Kane who’s been around for so many years.
“I think if he can bring the players he wants, that of course will help the team, it will help the club, because he is someone who wants to win, someone who wants to win now, and that’s probably what it was like at other clubs.
“So in terms of the staff, you can understand that he wants to bring in players now, players who are ready to play, who are ready to join the team. If that is possible, I think with him at the club, he can lead us forward, for sure.”
