Treasury staff held lockdown drinks party to celebrate Rishi Sunak’s spending review

“It wasn’t a formal party but maybe in hindsight it didn’t make the most sense,” a source said.

It is not believed that Mr. Sunak was at the party to celebrate the spending review

Treasury staff held a closed drink party to celebrate Rishi Sunak’s spending review, it has been revealed.

Some staff who worked on the spending review in the fall of 2020 drank office drinks while England was under lockdown restrictions.

It comes as Boris Johnson struggles to expose the rule-breaking celebrations in Downing Street in the run-up to last Christmas.

The Times reported that about two dozen civil servants were present for drinks on November 25, 2020.

A Treasury spokesperson said: “A number of HMT employees came into the office to work on the 2020 spending review. We learned that a few employees had impromptu drinks around their desks after the event.

“The Treasury did not organize a personal party last Christmas.”

“They all worked really hard,” a source told The Times.

“They had to be in the office anyway that day. It wasn’t a formal party but maybe in hindsight it wasn’t the most sensible thing to do.”

At that time, non-essential shops, entertainment and leisure venues as well as pubs, bars and restaurants were closed, and people were urged to stay at home except for limited reasons including work if it was not possible to do so from home.

The newspaper said Chancellor Rishi Sunak was not present at the event and it is understood he was not aware of it at the time.

Downing Street said it had canceled any plans to hold a Christmas party this year.

It came as Dominic Cummings, a former aide to Boris Johnson, said there was “a lot” of party photos at No. 10 that would “inevitably come out”.

Cummings dismissed defenses of the prime minister’s unfamiliar allies about the celebrations under his roof amid signs of Johnson’s waning popularity.

The Prime Minister, Mark Spencer, insisted Downing Street employees “don’t drink alcohol” and celebrate during Covid restrictions after it emerged that the Prime Minister’s press chief addressed staff at a single event last Christmas.

No 10 said Mr Johnson retained full confidence in Jack Doyle to serve as director of communications despite ITV reports that he addressed as many as 50 people and gave a speech at one party on December 18.
