Tsunami in South Pacific after volcanic eruption in Tonga

The two-foot-high tsunami waves were detected by sea-level gauges in the US land capital of American Samoa following volcanic activity in Tonga, the US-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

The tsunami observatory said in a statement that the tsunami threat persists, and that fluctuations in sea level and strong ocean currents pose risks along the shores in the ports.

Tonga has issued a tsunami warning after an undersea volcano erupts.

A video recording posted on social media showed large waves washing beaches in coastal areas.

Tonga’s meteorological services said a tsunami warning was in effect across Tonga.

Saturday’s eruption was the latest in a series of spectacular eruptions from the Hongga Tonga Hongga Hapai volcano.
