Why do you need a VPS server for automated forex trading
A VPS is a virtual private server which is basically an always-on virtual computer. If you are using automated expert advisors in MT5, we highly recommend the VPS. MQL5 has a built-in VPS in MT5 terminals and we highly recommend it. If you haven’t used MetaVPS (VPS Built in Terminal) before, it can be confusing to get started, so we want to simplify it for you.
Why do you need a VPS? The truth is that you don’t need a VPS but it is highly recommended. If you are trading from a home terminal, you will get a higher ping from MetaVPS which means that your trades are slightly delayed. Also, your home computer might randomly fail or lose internet connection which you definitely don’t want. To check the ping, look at the bottom right of your MT5 and it will be listed. Mine is currently 143.80 ms.
My ping in MetaVPS is currently 1.86ms so you can see the difference.
The ping helps but we recommend MetaVPS for its ease of use and because its uptime is 99.99%. This means that your automated forex robot will always be in good shape and trading no matter what happens with your home computer.
Setting up MetaVPS is easy and you can do it right from your MT5 forex trading terminal. In your MT5 terminal, you can search in the bottom right to find the VPS icon. You can also find the VPS button in the “Navigator” window on the left.
Next, click on one of the VPS buttons and you will get to the VPS menu.
On the VPS page you have some options for your VPS server. You can do this monthly or up to 6 months at a time. Complete the purchase through your MQL5 account which will take you to the next step of the process.
Then you will come across a screen like the one below. You have the option to start, stop, and relay. We’ll choose to migrate but before we do that, you want to make sure you have all the charts and expert advisors the way you want them on your home PC. What happens when you migrate is that all open charts, experts, and settings are pushed to MetaVPS. You basically copy the terminal environment to the VPS and you will start working on the VPS.
Go ahead and make sure the Migrate All box is checked and click Migrate. After it is completed, you will get a green message informing you that the migration has been successful.
This is! Now you can shut down your device knowing that your MT5 Expert Advisors will always be working somewhere in the cloud.
Ultimately, you will want to change the settings on your EA or change the entire EA. To do this, all you have to do is make the changes on your terminal and click on Migrate all. All of your open experts, settings, and charts will replace the old one and you’ll be using the new setup right away.
