You’ve been washing your mugs all wrong

If you have a favorite mug that you drink from regularly, it must be covered in tough tea or coffee stains that don’t seem to budge.

This could be because you constantly get a drink on the go and often rinse the cup instead of giving it a good scrub.

But no matter how you wash the mugs, it turns out you’re doing it wrong.

Brown spots don’t look good, here’s how to get rid of them permanently.

Express.co.uk spoke with Dri-Pak to find out how to remove tea and coffee stains from mugs, so listen up.

Tannins, or tannic acid, are what give tea and coffee their brown color, but they are also used as dyestuffs.

While tannins are largely harmless to your body, they do stain your teeth and mugs.

Black, green, and herbal teas are the main culprits behind this and can cause your teeth to turn yellow or discolor if you drink them too much.

The same also applies to coffee.

If you notice that brown stains have built up in your favorite mug over time, the experts at Dri Pak said, “Get rid of the abrasive pad because it won’t treat the stain—it’s going to be too hard and too time consuming. It doesn’t make a huge difference.”

According to experts, there is one magical product that will do the job here.

“You only need one cheap, cheerful product to do the job: soda crystals,” the experts said.

Soda crystals are odorless white crystals composed of hydrated sodium carbonate.

When dissolved in water, these crystals form an ideal alkaline solution for removing stains and grease.

You can buy soda crystals as cheap as 80p from Ocado, so you don’t have to worry about buying expensive cleaning products here.

So if your favorite mug needs a little TLC, all you have to do is fill it with hot water and some soda crystals.

Allow the solution to soak for at least half an hour (preferably overnight) and then wipe the stains with a rag or brush.

If your mug gets really damaged by your love of hot drinks and it doesn’t remove all the stains, do it again and the stains will go away!
